Fueling nuclear power with seawater: Tests adsorbent to extract uranium from the ocean
ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? When you take a dip in the ocean, nuclear fuel is probably the farthest thing from your mind. Uranium floats in Earth's oceans in trace amounts of just 3 parts per billion, but it adds up. Combined, our oceans hold up to 4.5 billion tons of uranium -- enough to potentially fuel the world's nuclear power plants for 6,500 years.
Countries such as Japan have examined the ocean as a uranium source since the 1960s, but previous approaches have been too expensive to extract the quantities needed for nuclear fuel. Now researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are tweaking one of those concepts with the goal of making it more efficient and cost-competitive. The research is being done for the Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy.
Japan developed an adsorbent that attaches the uranium-loving chemical group amidoxime to a plastic polymer. ORNL examined the binding process between the plastic and chemical groups and used that knowledge to enhance the uranium-grabbing characteristic of the amidoxime groups on the adsorbent material's surface.
PNNL tested the adsorbent's performance at its Marine Sciences Laboratory in Sequim, Wash., DOE's only marine research facility. Using filtered seawater from nearby Sequim Bay, PNNL established a laboratory testing process to measure the effectiveness of both Japan's and ORNL's adsorbent materials. Initial tests showed ORNL's adsorbent can soak up more than two times the uranium than the material from Japan.
Results were presented Aug. 21 at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society, which runs Aug. 19-23 in Philadelphia. ORNL chemical engineer Costas Tsouris presented the research team's findings this afternoon, while PNNL chemical oceanographer Gary Gill presented a poster on the PNNL testing program this evening. Tsouris' presentation is part of a larger, day-long oral session on uranium extraction from seawater. Check out the ACS website (link below) for talk and poster abstracts.

Woman says men stole her wheelchair on way to church

A 65-year-old Dallas woman told police she was robbed of her motorized wheelchair and everything she had on Sunday night as she was heading to church.
Patricia Slaughter has survived two heart attacks and has diabetes and osteoporosis.
She said she was attacked underneath an overpass as she was heading to the church to pick up donated loaves of bread.
"They took all the money that I had to live until the first -- $50," she said. "They took my watch and ring, my ID -- everything."

Two men pulled up to Slaughter at about 7:30 p.m.
"I guess they just saw me going down the sidewalk and thought, 'Here's an old lady. She's not going to be no trouble,'" she said.
One of the men offered her money to come home with him. When she refused, she was attacked.
"He jumped out of the truck, and they yanked me out of the chair onto the ground," Slaughter said. "I went to get up and he put his foot on my stomach he said, 'You can't do anything lady -- stay down,' and they picked up the chair put it in the back of the van and drove off."
Both men fled the scene on Interstate 30, according to a police report.

Slaughter said she desperately wants her wheelchair back. She relies on her motorized wheelchair as her primary mode of transportation.
"It's everything," she said. "It's the way I go to the store, to church and everything."

Study details power of new chip to diagnose disease, analyze protein interactions
Monday, August 20, 2012Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine and Intel Corp. have collaborated to synthesize and study a grid-like array of short pieces of a disease-associated protein on silicon chips normally used in computer microprocessors. They used this chip, which was created through a process used to make semiconductors, to identify patients with a particularly severe form of the autoimmune disease lupus.
Although the new technology is focused on research applications, it has the potential to eventually improve diagnoses of a multitude of diseases, as well as to determine more quickly what drugs may be most effective for a particular patient. It may also speed drug development by enabling researchers to better understand how proteins interact in the body.
"When I see patients in the clinic right now, I may know they have arthritis, but I don't know which of the 20 or 30 types of the disease they have," said associate professor of medicine Paul (P.J.) Utz, MD, noting that existing methods can take days or even weeks to answer such questions. "Now we can measure thousands of protein interactions at a time, integrate this information to diagnose the disease and even determine how severe it may be. We may soon be able to do this routinely while the patient is still in the physician's office."
Utz is a co-senior author of the research, published online Aug. 19 in Nature Medicine. Postdoctoral scholar Chih Long Liu, PhD, and Madoo Varma, PhD, director and head of life science research operations and business strategy for Intel's Integrated Biosystems Laboratory, are the other senior authors. Graduate student Jordan Price is the first author. The research was funded in part by Intel Corp., and Intel scientists created the protein array on the silicon chips for the Stanford researchers to study.
Within each of our cells, proteins enter into and disband physical relationships in dizzying succession ? outdoing even our most-freewheeling Facebook friends. This intricate dance forms the machinery responsible for driving cell growth, sparking immune reactions and even causing disease. But understanding the microscopic minutiae of their fleeting attractions (why exactly is protein X hooking up with protein Y?), and the subsequent biological repercussions, has been difficult and time-consuming.
To better understand these interactions, researchers at Intel synthesized short segments of biological proteins, called peptides, on silicon wafers. To do so, they turned to the same process used to make semiconductors, employing a method using sequential steps of light exposure and chemical reactions called photolithography. The Stanford researchers then used the chip, which they've termed an Intel array, to analyze thousands of protein interactions simultaneously to diagnose disease, assess therapies and even design more-effective drugs.
The researchers hope to eventually embed an integrated semiconductor circuit within the microprocessor-ready silicon chip to create a sort of minicomputer that could take the guesswork and decision-making out of many clinical processes. It could perhaps spell out patient-specific diagnoses with letters of the alphabet, or identify which potential treatments are most likely to be effective.
The technology described in the study echoes that of DNA microarrays, in which thousands of unique nucleotide sequences are dotted on a glass slide in a grid-like pattern to identify patterns of gene expression in cells and tissues. Prior to the collaboration with Intel, Utz and his colleagues were using a similar technique for peptides ? affixing them in defined patterns to glass or other substrates and then washing them with solutions of cellular or blood-borne proteins. A binding event between a protein in the solution, such as an antibody, and its slide-bound partner is indicated by a fluorescent signal, which is developed through a meticulous and lengthy series of detection steps.
About four years ago, however, researchers at Intel approached Utz and his colleagues with the idea of using silicon as a microarray platform to synthesize the peptides directly on the chip, rather than making the peptides separately and spotting them on the array using a robot.
"Honestly, we thought it wouldn't work," said Utz. But it did, and it had several advantages. For one thing, silicon is much less sticky to proteins than glass. As a result, researchers can skip some experimental steps meant to block random binding of peptides to the substrate. Silicon also allows the researchers to arrange the individual peptides more closely together, using the space much more efficiently. Finally, unlike glass, silicon alone does not fluoresce, making signal detection easier.
There's also the promise of devising new, faster detection methods on the more-versatile silicon chip.
"If we couple these Intel arrays with an electronic detection method, for example, we could have real-time sensing over a period of minutes," said Utz.
In the study, the researchers tested whether their array could help categorize patients with lupus ? an autoimmune disease in which patients make antibodies that attack a type of protein in their cells called a histone (in addition to other proteins).
"Lupus is highly variable, and in some cases is quite severe," said Utz. "About half of patients are likely to require more intensive therapy. We wanted to see whether we could identify these patients with our arrays."
Using the new silicon chips, the researchers were able to identify patients with lupus who expressed high levels of antibodies against a particular histone called 2B. They then confirmed that these patients were precisely the ones struggling with a more severe form of the disease.
"Companies developing therapies to block the pathway responsible for this binding are now accepting patients with lupus for clinical trials without knowing which subset of disease they are in," said Utz. "This method could potentially be used to identify only those patients likely to benefit, and aid in the identification of effective drugs."
To make the discovery, the researchers made a microarray using the last 21 amino acids of histone 2B. Histones keep DNA packaged tightly within a cell's nucleus; binding of various proteins to the exposed end of the histone selectively grants or excludes access to the packed genes. The global importance of the binding events, and the fact that autoimmune diseases like lupus arise when the body makes antibodies against the histone's end, led the researcher to choose it for their first test of the technology.
In making the array, they synthesized every possible overlapping sequence of every length from the short string of amino acids: 1-21 (the full-length sequence) to 17-20 (four amino acids) to 2-20 (19 amino acids) and all other possible variations. Three of the amino acids are also sometimes modified to carry extra chemical groups that can enhance or impede protein binding. Including every possible length and combination of modified and unmodified amino acids gave nearly 9,000 unique peptide dots on the array. They then washed the chip with solutions of antibodies known to bind the sequence.
The pattern of binding showed that one antibody could recognize and bind to a sequence composed of only two amino acids of the original 21. Another required at least four amino acids, one of them modified, for binding. Analyzing the binding of solutions of other antibodies in each case delineated specific binding regions, or epitopes, within the original short sequence.
Understanding the binding at such levels of detail will allow researchers to tinker with drugs meant to disrupt, enhance or mimic biological reactions within our cells to create better therapies, or to understand how and why natural processes sometimes go awry.
The researchers are now exploring the use of the technique to help design influenza vaccines that elicit a strong immune response, as well as ways to incorporate the three-dimensional folding involved in most protein interactions.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? While they understand the public's concern over what might be perceived as an apparent hazing incident involving Prince Amukamara, several New York Giants insist that throwing the second-year cornerback into a tub of ice water was a football tradition and not bullying.
Amukamara and Jason Pierre-Paul, the Pro Bowl defensive end who threw him into the metal ice tub, said Monday they are friends and there was nothing personal involved.
However, both are concerned that the video of the incident tweeted by punter Steve Weatherford might give youngsters the idea that bullying and hazing are OK.

BEIJING ? Construction laborer Yi Jichun has never heard of Illinois or Iowa. But the migrant worker's favorite comfort food comes straight out of the U.S. Midwest: soybean oil.
The world's biggest consumers of edible oils, Chinese households have developed a taste for the stuff that would make a county fair fry cook proud. Be it a simple stir-fry, poached fish or deep-fried pork ribs, many Chinese diners love their grub covered in an oily sheen. Jugs of the golden liquid make popular gifts for Chinese New Year.
"Without the oil, it would taste too plain," Yi said as he tucked into a lunch of sliced cucumbers and chicken drumsticks slathered with grease. "I wouldn't want to finish it."
And that has officials in Beijing worried. The worst U.S. drought in half a century is sending global grain prices soaring. The fallout is almost certain to be felt at dinner tables across China. The No. 1 foreign buyer of American soybeans, which are pressed into cooking oil and used for animal feed, China last year purchased about half of U.S. exports, more than $10.4 billion worth, according to the American Soybean Assn. China has also stepped up purchases of U.S. corn and wheat to feed the nation's growing appetite.
Poor U.S. harvests could fuel Chinese food inflation and social discontent. China has already begun tapping its grain reserves to ensure price stability. The government has ordered the nation's biggest cooking oil producers twice in recent months to keep their prices in check. And it's scouring the globe for alternative supplies.
It won't be easy. More than two-thirds of cooking oil consumed in China comes from soybeans, and most of those soybeans are supplied by the U.S., according to Ma Wenfeng, an analyst with Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consultant Co. For now, Chinese consumers are bound to the fortunes of farmers in the American heartland.
"Soybean oil is the most important edible oil in China ... which makes us vulnerable to the drought" gripping the U.S., Ma said.
Retail prices have so far held steady. A standard 5-liter jug (1.32 gallons) of edible oil in China averages about $9.76 today, only 24 cents more than at the beginning of the year, Ma said.
But that could change if the U.S. soybean harvest proves especially weak. Prices have risen about 40% since January to more than $16 a bushel.
Expensive grain means higher costs for animal feed, which leads to pricier meat, milk and eggs. That's especially tough on people in developing countries. In China, consumers devote more than one-fifth of their monthly income to food, about three times more than their American counterparts, according to the USDA.
That's "why authorities get concerned about social stability," said Alistair Thornton, a Beijing-based analyst for IHS Global Insight. "Inflation has a long history of sparking discontent, so obviously it's on the forefront of the Chinese leadership's mind."
Rising Chinese incomes in recent years have fueled a surge in meat consumption. Ditto for cooking oil, which a few decades ago was rationed with food stamps. Fan Zhihong, a nutrition expert at China Agricultural University in Beijing, said that's leading to more obesity and heart disease.
"With economic development, people now have enough money for cooking oil. So they spoil themselves by using lots and making their food delicious," Fan said. "They'll even make a healthy dish of dark leafy greens into a fatty dish."
An artery-clogging sample of Beijing's local treats includes pai cha (crispy fried dough), xian bing (fried pancakes stuffed with pork and chives) and zha jiang mian (room temperature noodles topped with bean paste that often arrives submerged in half an inch of clear grease).
"It tastes better when it's fried," said Li Yuanying, 25, espousing a universal truth as she purchased deep-fried vegetable balls at aWal-Martcooked food counter in Beijing's central business district.
Before her was a shiny selection of fried chilies, fried peanuts, fried crullers, fried pancakes and fried sesame balls. Nearby, stacked high against a wall, was an arsenal of cooking oils that would have made Southern cooking star Paula Deen feel right at home. In addition to soybean oil, there were large jugs of peanut, corn, rapeseed, palm, tea seed and fish oils.
"I tell our board members that it reminds me of the cereal aisle in the U.S.," said Paul Burke, the Beijing-based regional director of the U.S. Soybean Export Council.
Prices ranged from $7.40 for 5 liters of soybean oil to $19.35 for a blend of olive and sunflower oils. In the U.S., such quantities might be suitable for restaurant owners or, say, someone deep-frying a turkey. But in China, they're a staple of the family grocery list.
"This may last me a little more than a month," said a senior citizen who purchased soybean oil because it was still cheaper than many of the alternatives.
Rising prices could be one way to get Chinese consumers to scale back on greasy food. But some cooks said they'll believe it when they see it.
"Everything needs oil," said a Beijing steamed bun vendor who gave only his surname, Chen. "Especially the vegetarian buns. If you don't put oil, it won't taste good."

OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) ? Hundreds of people gathered at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee spoke of redemption, unity and strength during the first Sunday service there since a gunman killed six people before fatally shooting himself.
The service capped a weekend of events meant to honor the victims and restore the temple as a place of worship. While there were still tears and red eyes, many participants said healing was under way.
Visitors removed their shoes outside and filed past portraits of the victims, shuffling down a flower-lined aisle into the main prayer room. They dropped dollar bills in front of a shrine where their holy book sits and bowed for two to three seconds. Then they sat on the floor ?women on the left, men on the right ? their heads covered with scarves, and listened as a priest recited religious hymns in the Hindi dialect of Punjabi.
Those at Sunday's service included Sikhs from as far away as California and about 50 from Cleveland, who chartered a bus to make the eight-hour drive to support their community.
"It's an emotional day but it's getting better," said Justice Khalsa, 41, of Milwaukee, who visits the temple three or four days a week. "I'm smiling and laughing now, but once this group goes away and we're back to our regular schedule, it will be haunting, I'm sure."
The proceedings began in the parking lot with a "nishan sahib," or a ceremony in which participants clean a Sikh flagpole to symbolize the temple's rebirth.
Women sang hymns as a group lowered the pole. About 50 people, mostly men and boys, unwrapped a faded orange cloth that covered the pole, washed the pole with water and milk and then rewrapped it with a darker orange cloth. The group then filed inside the temple for more prayers and hymns.
Wade Michael Page, 40, used a 9 mm pistol to kill six people and would four others, including a police officer, in an ambush that took place shortly before a service was to begin Aug. 5. He shot himself after being wounded by another police officer.
Page, an Army veteran with a record of minor alcohol-related crimes and a spotty employment history, had performed with several bands associated with white supremacists and neo-Nazi groups. Still, investigators say they may never know for certain what prompted his attack.
When relatives gathered to plan Friday's memorial for the six who died, several wanted to include a seventh empty coffin to remember Page.
"It would have sent a message that we have forgiven this man for his actions," said Amardeep Singh, the son of one victim. "We forgave him because otherwise it would have been a thorn in our side for the rest of our lives."
The idea was eventually scuttled, and most at the temple Sunday seemed to content to forget about Page.
"He should not be discussed," Khalsa said. "People like that aren't important. They don't deserve attention. We're concentrating on the people who lost their lives."
Temple officials unveiled a simple but powerful memorial to the victims. While leaders had repaired most of the damage to the temple, they left one dime-sized bullet hole unrepaired. Beneath it they installed a small gold plate engraved with "We Are One. 8-5-12"
The hole, a door jamb near the main prayer room, is meant to remind visitors of the victims: the temple president, three priests and two worshippers, as well as a police officer and three others who were injured.
It was in their memory that Amarjit Singh Kang, 48, organized the charter bus from Cleveland. He said attendees didn't think twice about whether to make the trip.
"It's important we all be together," he said.

AWOL soldier gets life term for Fort Hood plot
WACO, Texas (AP) ? An AWOL soldier convicted of planning to blow up a restaurant full of Fort Hood troops has been sentenced to life in prison by a federal judge in Texas.
Army Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo received the punishment Friday in Waco.
Abdo told authorities he planned to make bombs as part of a "massive attack" against Fort Hood soldiers last year. He was convicted in May on six federal charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.
The 22-year-old represented himself at the sentencing.
Abdo was AWOL from Fort Campbell, Ky., when he was arrested with bomb-making materials last summer at a Fort Hood-area motel.

I'm under the impression that some users are trying to sell their home, though will settle for renters, but I don't understand how come I go back to my favorites a day or two later and not only does the rental state as sold, but some say they were sold last year! I recently became a zillow user about a month ago, so why are so many homes listed as rentals when the were sold over a year ago!?!

China trade decelerates in sign of global weakness

BEIJING (AP) ? China's trade growth plunged even more sharply than forecast in July in a new sign of global economic weakness.
Exports rose just 1 percent over a year earlier, down from June's 11.3 percent rate and below forecasts of about 5 percent, data showed Friday. Import growth fell to 4.7 percent from the previous month's 6.3 percent and also below forecasts.
The figures follow disappointing data Thursday showing weak Chinese factory production and retail sales in July. They add to signs the world's second-largest economy is still struggling with its deepest downturn since the 2008 global crisis despite repeated government stimulus efforts.
The latest signs of weakness have prompted calls for still more stimulus measures. Beijing has cut interest rates twice since the start of June and is pumping money into the economy through higher spending on building low-cost housing and other public works.
Economic growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the quarter ending in June. The International Monetary Fund and private sector analysts have trimmed their forecasts for the year but say growth should be about 8 percent ? above the official 7.5 percent target but below the double-digit rates of recent years.
The slowdown is politically dangerous for the Communist Party because it raises the risk of job losses and unrest at a time when the ruling party is trying to enforce calm ahead of a handover of power this year to younger leaders. Export industries employ millions of workers and weak sales, coupled with higher costs, have led to a wave of bankruptcies.
China's trade growth has fallen steadily this year as global demand for its exports cooled and efforts to boost domestic consumption have failed to gain traction as fast as the government hoped.
In July, its global trade surplus narrowed by 20.3 percent from July 2011 to $25.1 billion but was this year's second biggest after June's $31.7 billion.
Exports were $176.9 billion while imports were $151.8 billion.
The trade surplus with the 27-nation European Union, China's biggest trading partner, narrowed by 37.9 percent to $10.8 billion, reflecting sluggish European demand due to the continent's debt crisis. The surplus with the United States narrowed by 4.8 percent to $19.9 billion.
Beijing has set a goal of increasing total trade by 10 percent this year, a target that looks increasingly hard to meet. Trade grew 9.2 percent for the first half of the year but the rate fell to 7.1 percent for the first seven months.

Police Warn Of Business Marketing Scam | St. Joseph Post
St Joseph Police are warning area businesses about a scam that has been around for awhile, but recently resurfaced.
Captain Kevin Castle tells us they took a report from R&W Tow and Recovery about the scam.
The owner of the company said he received an email the day before with an advertisement from a company calling itself ?Eagle Marketing Group?.
(NOT to be confused with the parent company of St Joe Post, or radio stations K-Jo 105.5/Q Country 92.7/680 KFEQ/ESPN 1550)
The e-mail ad said it was selling tv spots, and later that day a man with out-of-state license plates came to the business with a poster of the advertisement. ?Castle says the man had an invoice and was attempting to collect money for selling the ads.
Other businesses in past years have been approached in a similar manner, according to Castle.
?The businesses on the ads have not authorized the use of their names, ? Castle said in the advisory, ?and the advertising spots are not believed to exist. ?
?In past instances, business who ?purchased? the ads, learned their checks were quickly cashed and the subjects selling them had left town.? ?

Study Of Marin Women Links Breast Cancer And Vitamin D Receptor

MARIN (SAN FRANCISCO)? Data collected from thousands of Marin County women will be used to validate a new study that finds a possible link between high breast cancer rates and a Vitamin D receptor.
Since 2005, Dr. Kathie D?Alessandro of Point Reyes Station has been studying Marin County breast cancer with UCSF and the company InterGenetics Inc.
Dr. D?Alessandro explained one novel finding of her research was that the Vitamin D receptor?s gene variant was significantly enriched in the elevated risk group.
Larry Meredith, director of Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, said the findings will be applied to a larger Marin study of 14,000 women.
?We have bio-specimens and so we will work with the researchers who validate some of the findings,? said Meredith.

Joyce Bichler from the advocacy group Breast Cancer Action said its already been proven that environment plays a role in breast cancer.
?There are many things besides genetics that play into this. Figuring that out is really the task at hand,? she claimed.
Dr. Dalessandri concurred and said the environment may impact genes and that the main environmental factors are diet and nutrition.
The study concluded that, in Marin, obese women and women with high alcohol intake are at higher risk for breast cancer.

Gervais to launch Web series 'Learn English'
NEW YORK (AP) ? Ricky Gervais wants to teach you English.
The comedian announced Tuesday on his blog that he's working on a Web series called "Learn English with Ricky Gervais." It co-stars Gervais' frequent collaborator and foil Karl Pinkington.
Though Gervais didn't describe the series, it can be expected to be more comedic than educational.
The comedian said he had finished the pilot episode and that he would post it online for free. After that, he said he may charge a few dollars from viewers or seek sponsorship. Gervais said he hopes to subtitle the show in "as many languages as possible," including a Klingon version.

Djukanovic Won't Rule Out Run for Prime Minister :: Balkan Insight
When asked whether he would run for the post of prime minister or president of Montenegro, Djukanovic said that at the moment he did not intend to do so but that he could not completely rule out the possibility.
?This is politics; you never know what will happen until the end,? he told reporters.
Djukanovic, who is currently the president of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, dominated the political scene in Montenegro for nearly two decades before stepping down as prime minister in December 2010.
He took up the post of premier in 1991, and held it alternately with the post of president for almost 20 years.
The DPS, which currently rules the country with Social Democratic Party, voted last week to cut short the mandate of the current parliament to allow for early elections, which President Filip Vujanovic called for October 14. The ruling parties argued that the government needed a stable four-year mandate in order to carry out EU accession negotiations.
The ruling coalition, which has been together for 14 years, intends to run together again in the October election and is expected to win.
It is still not clear if Montenegro's leading opposition parties will form a large coalition.
The opposition New Serbian Democracy and Movement for Change parties have said they will run as a coalition, and have formed the Democratic Front led by former diplomat Miodrag Lekic.
The Socialist People's Party of Montenegro, SNP, which is the country's largest opposition party, has not said whether it will join the Democratic Front, and is expected to make a decision on the coalition question by August 5.
Darko Pajovic of the newly formed Positive Montenegro party said earlier that his party would take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections independently.
SNP leader Srdjan Milic has said that the ruling coalition is the only political opponent of his party, adding that the SNP was open for talks with Democratic Front representatives about anything that would help remove the current government.
?If someone wants honest and fair cooperation, they can have it with the SNP. But if they want to take us down, they will have their biggest opponent,? he said.
The SNP has argued that Montenegro lacks fair and democratic conditions for elections. The party has stressed, however, that it will not boycott the elections if other opposition parties do not support a boycott.
