LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mayim Bialik is splitting from her husband of nine years.
The 36-year-old actress says in a statement posted online Wednesday that she and husband Michael Stone have decided to divorce. The couple has two young sons.
Bialik recently released a book about attachment parenting, but says the philosophy that encourages forming close bonds with near-constant physical contact played no role in the couple's split.
The Emmy-nominated star of CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" says "relationships are complicated no matter what style of parenting you choose."
She says divorce is "terribly sad, painful and incomprehensible" for children and adds that the couple's sons remain their priority.
Bialik first gained fame as the star of the 1990s sitcom "Blossom." She holds a doctoral degree in neuroscience from UCLA, specializing in obsessive-compulsive disorder in adolescents.

Attorney General Bondi Advocates for Extended Tax Relief for Distressed Homeowners
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ?Attorney General Pam Bondi and Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen are leading the national effort by state attorneys general urging Congress to extend tax relief for consumers who have mortgage debt canceled or forgiven due to financial hardship or a decline in housing values. Forty-two state attorneys general have joined Attorney General Bondi and Attorney General Jepsen in signing on to a letter to U.S. House and Senate leaders requesting them to extend this distressed homeowner tax relief, which has been in effect since 2007 and is scheduled to expire Dec. 31, 2012.
?We are urging Congress to protect distressed homeowners who qualify for mortgage relief from encountering an unexpected tax bill from the IRS,? stated Attorney General Pam Bondi. ?This tax relief is critical in helping Floridians keep their homes and get back on their feet.?
The impending expiration comes at a time when many homeowners nationwide are benefitting from the $25 billion national settlement agreement with the nation?s five largest loan servicing companies. A preliminary report released this week estimates the benefit to consumers nationally at over $26 billion. Many other banks across the country also offer mortgage modification and debt relief programs.
Under the federal Mortgage Debt Relief Act, in effect since 2007, mortgage debt that is forgiven after a foreclosure or short sale or through a loan modification provided to a homeowner in financial hardship may be excluded from a taxpayer?s calculation of taxable income. This exclusion only applies to mortgage debt forgiven on primary residences, not second homes.

I attended the BBC Creative Diversity Network, ?the event was anchored by BBC News presenter Jane Hill, and hosted at The Hackney Empire. Many accolades were accredited to Hackney, holding the area dear, for its creative hub and diverseness. The first to pay homage was an emotional Zawe Ashton ?Fresh meat actress? who won the nomination for ?best breakthrough on screen talent?.
This was a joyful event, but also one of appreciation. Many of the award presenters; Lenny Henry, Doreen Lawrence, Professor Mary Beard, to name a few; and the awardees appreciated the fact that the no less deserved diverse were being recognised for their efforts in their creation for the wonderful medium of TV.
Another sense of appreciation came from mentees who had been given access to a once foreign terrain. It was a real tear jerker to watch a young mentee, alongside her mentor, receive an award for ?Best news coverage?, for a piece she had produced using her own experience and insight into life as a homeless teenager in London.
It may have been a long time coming but the BBC should be proud of what it has accomplished with this event. It was about as diverse as diverse gets. Some of the subject matters of programmes which made it through to the nominations* included, disability, drug addiction, treatment of the elderly. Other nominations recognised diverse initiatives run by partners of the CDN which enabled people from a diverse background to be part of a creative production.
The award giving ceremony ended on a high. The outstanding achievement award was presented to channel four for their fantastic coverage of the Paralympic games.
The evening did not end there; the attendees were invited to the adjoining diner for hot canap?s and cold beverages. This was an opportunity to network with, mostly BBC staff, but also diverse presenters and actors. Actors from Coronation street, Emerdale, I?ve already mentioned ?Fresh meat?, and Eastenders supported the event.
I met and got speaking to Michelle, a lady working in marketing and PR. She informed me that she is working on the webisode ?The Brothers?. I was not aware how huge a success it had been. I found this very encouraging. As a screen writer trying to break into the industry, hearing that someone had independently made things happen filled me with optimism and positivity. It reminded me of two things; One, Make sure your content story, film, or end product is good; and two, network like crazy. If the big fish turn your vision, concept down, speak to people who have made things happen and follow that path.
I also met, by accident a lovely man named Chord. He works in PR, and has very recently launched his own magazine. The content was amazing, he is already doing great things and will no doubt; go on to achieve even bigger and greater things.
I did not spend much time talking to the workers at the BBC, although they were all very friendly and approachable, the perception I had was that they were at a work do and were having a great time catching up with their work colleagues.
All in all I think the BBC can and should feel proud of the CDN. I wish the CDN all the best and just hope it gets bigger and better with time.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Thursday ordered the Pentagon to dig into and determine why an alarming number of generals and admirals have been snared by a variety of ethical lapses and misconduct allegations, headlined by the admitted marital infidelity of former four-star general and ex-CIA Director David Petraeus.
According to a statement released by the Department of Defense, Panetta believes that while the "vast majority" of U.S. general officers continue to abide by traditional ethical standards, he has nonetheless become concerned about the spike in alleged misbehavior among a rising number of flag officers spanning the Army, Navy and Marines.
"Over the past several months, the Secretary has spoken with the service secretaries, service chiefs, and combatant commanders about those instances when senior officers have not lived up to the standards expected of them. This has been an ongoing discussion reflecting shared concerns," the DOD release said. "This week, the Secretary directed General Dempsey to work with the other members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to review how to better foster a culture of stewardship among our most senior military officers.? This process is intended to reinforce and strengthen the standards that keep us a well led and disciplined military."

Panetta was in Thailand Thursday as part of a visit to Asia. Neither Panetta's order nor the DOD statement mentioned Petraeus, who has been under FBI investigation, or Marine Gen. John R. Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, who is involved in the Petreaus case.?Allen has denied any wrongdoing.
In addition, three other top-rung commanders have recently been punished by the military or remain under investigation for alleged misconduct:
Army Gen. William Ward, the four-star general who once led the U.S. Africa Command was?demoted Tuesday?amid accusations that he spent thousands of dollars on lavish travel. He was stripped of one star and will retire. In August, a?Defense Department Inspector General?s Report?said Ward took an 11-day trip to Washington and Atlanta, costing $129,000 but spending just three days on official business.
Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair is accused of 26 violations of military law including forcible sodomy, wrongful sexual conduct, possessing pornography while deployed and conduct unbecoming of an officer. According to prosecutors, the alleged sexual assaults happened in Afghanistan, Iraq and Germany, as well as at military bases in the United States. In May, Sinclair was removed from Afghanistan, where he?d served as a deputy commander for support. An initial military hearing has ended, but there has been no decision on whether to proceed to a court martial, The Associated Press reported.
Navy Cmdr. Joseph E. Darlak and top officers of the San Diego-based Navy frigate USS Vandegrift were relieved of duty on Nov. 2 after a boisterous, drunken port visit to Vladivostok, Russia.?Darlak was removed, the Navy said, after an investigation found he had exhibited "poor leadership and failure to ensure the proper conduct of his wardroom officers" during the three-day September stop, the?Associated Press reported.
Ward, Sinclair and Darlak have not commented publicly about the charges against them.
Some military observers see the recent spate of high-profile cases of alleged misconduct as a much larger issue affecting the armed forces.
Directing combat operations on the far side of the world has separated many general officers from their families for the better part of a decade while they live in ?an alternate-reality universe? ? culturally insulated along with other brass ? while being increasingly viewed as ?untouchable,? said Frank Wuco, a retired U.S. Naval intelligence chief.
That distance and divide can put military commanders at risk of losing their moral compass, said Wuco,?who hosts a weekly radio program in Tampa, Fla.?In the late stages of Wuco?s intelligence career, he attended multiple meetings with then-Gen. David Petraeus who, at the time, was leading U.S. forces in the Middle East.
Wuco describes the former four-star general as ?down to earth,? but he said the social status of many U.S. generals has ballooned to new heights during the two wars (Iraq and Afghanistan), allowing American military leaders to ?begin to live in this kind of artificial bubble.?
?With the senior guys and the flag officers, this is like the new royalty. We treat them like kings and princes. These general officers in the military, at a certain point, become untouchable,? Wuco said. ?In many cases, they get their own airplanes, their own helicopters. When they walk into a room, everybody comes to attention. In the case of some of them, people are very afraid to speak up or to disagree. Being separated from real life all the time in that way probably leaves them vulnerable (to lapses in moral judgement)."
But Thomas Ricks, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, disagrees with the notion that military leadership is more insulated and that they have had their heads clouded by adulation. To Ricks, the problem is squarely centered on a wholesale loss of accountability across the landscape of the American armed forces.
"It is because the U.S. military has lost hold of the idea of accountability - that is, rewarding success and removing failures. And so people get promoted kind of mindlessly, and aren't punished when they fail repeatedly over the years," said Ricks, who also writes a blog for ForeignPolicy.com called ?The Best Defense."
"Ultimately, when their failure becomes public, they may get punished. Bottom line: Today being a general is like being a tenured professor. You can do a lousy job and keep it, but if you embarrass the institution with moral lapses, you will get bounced," Ricks said.

As for the reports of Petraeus? infidelity ? as well as any unreported sexual dalliances involving other military leaders ? ex-intelligence chief Wuco contends such behaviors within the highest levels of the military ?are nothing new.?
?This type of cheating, while definitely alarming, is not off limits to the military,? Wuco said. ?This is classic ?men of a certain age.? You?re looking at a guy who?s up there in age. He?s been working his ass off his entire adult life, separated from all of the good times everybody else has been having. I don?t think it?s anything more than: it made him feel good. It was good for his ego. He was holding the attention of a younger woman. It?s a classic story across every center of society.?
In fact, two of America's most venerated generals - Dwight D. Eisenhower and Matthew Ridgway -?were known to have had romantic flings?during World War II and the Korean War, but their infidelities didn't make news and certainly didn't cost them their commands.
A third World War II hero, Gen. George S. Patton, also had an extramarital affair, according to the book,?"Patton,"?by the late Martin Blumenson.
"We?re in a different time now," said Robert O. Kirkland, a military historian who teaches at the University of Southern California. He called the Eisenhower and Ridgway liaisons with women other than their wives "documented in the historical record."
"Maybe some things in the past were overlooked," Kirkland said. "They?re now enforced."

The Russian government temporarily blocked two popular websites on Monday under a new law intended to protect children from harmful material online.
Russia's telecommunications and media regulator, Roskomnadzor, blocked two sites - RuTracker.org, a Russian file-sharing site much like The Pirate Bay; and Librusek, an electronic library similar to Wikipedia - according to The Wall Street Journal.
RuTracker wrote a blog post about its situation on Monday, calling the blacklisting "idiocy" and saying that Roskomnadzor rules were unclear. It claimed to have been blocked because it was hosting a file called the "Encyclopedia of Suicide", which it says was unpopular and was empty anyway.
The block, which has since been lifted, represents the kind of action that internet freedom advocates warn comes with the territory of internet blacklists overseen by centralised government control. When the law was passed in July, it was touted by the government as a tool for stamping out sites that host child pornography and material associated with drug abuse, racism and "antisocial behavior" (summarised here in a Russian legal journal).
The country's web community hasn't taken kindly to the law. Russia's biggest search engine, Yandex, and the Russian-language Wikipedia have both staged online protests.
File-sharing sites typically encounter problems because of their connection with sharing content that is protected by copyright. But Russia's stance on the protection of intellectual property has been poor historically, which makes the move all the more unexpected.
In a July article commenting on the new law, Russian news site The Runet wrote that Russian internet and communications companies like Mail.ru are making their own efforts to ensure that the internet is safe for children, establishing a voluntary internet policing league which is "achieving positive results".

We'll deal with any lost romanticism if it means giving Formula E, and performance EVs, a healthy dose of credibility.
Stocks closed?Monday flat amid concerns of a drawn-out battle over the "fiscal cliff."
Barclays cut its year-end target for the S&P 500 to 1,325 from 1,395, citing the government spending cuts and tax increases that will take effect early next year unless Congress acts before then.
The S&P 500 dropped 2.4 percent last week, the worst week for the benchmark index since June. The drop was partly propelled by concerns about whether there will be a timely solution to avoid the "fiscal cliff."
Though most consider it unlikely that a deal will not be reached, analysts fear going over the cliff could push the economy back into recession. There are also concerns that a protracted debate could hurt business and investment sentiment.
"It's just the uncertainty. It's going to continue to have that negative influence on any kind of small business growth or hiring or planning," said Alan Lancz, president of Alan B. Lancz & Associates Inc in Toledo, Ohio.
"You not only have it for small businesses and the like, but on the investor side, too."
Stocks traded little changed for much of the day before gaining modest strength briefly in the early afternoon. Trading volume was light, with the U.S. bond market and government offices closed for the Veterans Day holiday.
Gilead Sciences helped pull the Nasdaq higher after the company reported over the weekend a 100 percent cure rate using a combination of drugs in a small number of patients with the most common and hardest to treat form of hepatitis C.
The S&P 500 is still up about 10 percent for 2012, though recent months have eroded those gains. The Nasdaq has fallen for five straight weeks.
Earlier in the day,?NYSE Euronext?suspended trading in more than 200 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange due to a technical problem with a server, although the stocks in question continued trading on other markets.?The NYSE?first alerted traders it was having problems with one of its cash equity matching engines at 9:38 a.m. and it said it would not publish quotes on a total of 216 stocks, including CVS Caremark ?and Lazard .
The NYSE said it ?anticipates a normal trading day in all securities? on Tuesday.
Some major acquisition news gave investors reason for optimism on Monday. Precision Castparts Corp offered to buy Titanium Metals Corp for $2.9 billion, while Leucadia National Corp agreed to buy investment bank Jefferies Group for $3.6 billion.
Overseas, a report over the weekend showed China's export growth climbed to a five-month high, beating expectations and adding to recent data suggesting the country's seven straight quarters of slowing economic growth have ended.
Investors also watched the latest developments from the euro zone debt crisis. Euro zone governments will not agree to disburse more money to debt-ravaged Greece on Monday, despite the country's approving a tough 2013 budget, because there is not yet a consensus on how to make its debts sustainable into the next decade.
As a result, the region's finance ministers may have to talk again later this week.
CAIRO (Reuters) - The leader of Syria's new opposition coalition urged European states on Tuesday to recognize it as the legitimate government, enabling it to buy the weapons it needs to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.
Britain and France appeared to set further conditions, notably that it first rally support inside the country, before they grant full recognition to the Syrian National Coalition. And, like the United States, Europeans are still reluctant to arm rebel forces which include anti-Western Islamist militants.
Western caution, and an Arab League endorsement that stopped short of full recognition, indicate that the coalition forged with such difficulty in Qatar two days ago may yet find it hard to win wholehearted support, even from its allies.
Speaking to Reuters by telephone as Arab and European ministers met to discuss Syria at the Arab League in Cairo, Mouaz Alkhatib, the Damascus preacher elected unopposed on Sunday to lead the new group, asked for diplomatic backing.
"I request European states to grant political recognition to the coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people and to give it financial support," he said.
"When we get political recognition, this will allow the coalition to act as a government and hence acquire weapons and this will solve our problems," Alkhatib added.
France's defense minister and Britain's foreign minister both said that forming the new group under Alkhatib, a moderate noted for his embrace of Syria's religious and ethnic minorities, was an important milestone but not sufficient for full recognition as a government-in-waiting.
So far, concerted action on Syria has been thwarted by divisions within the opposition, as well as by big power rivalries and a regional divide between Sunni Muslim foes of Assad and his Shi'ite allies in Iran and Lebanon.
Russia and China, which have lent Assad diplomatic support since the uprising erupted in March last year, have shown no sign of warming towards his Western- and Arab-backed opponents.
Lebanese analyst Nadim Shehadi said Western conditions were just as great an obstacle to resolving the Syria crisis.
Where once the United States sought to convince Iraqis and Afghans that U.S. military intervention was for their own good, now Syrians seeking democracy and freedom were trying to persuade a reluctant Washington to act, he said.
"The U.S. is playing hard to get," he said. "It's like you have to pass a test to show you are united, have leadership, are not Islamist jihadists ... and the U.S. is still hesitant as though you have to 'deserve' all that before they intervene."
"STEP FORWARD"
Cajoled by Qatar and the United States, the ineffectual Syrian National Council, previously the main opposition body based abroad, agreed to join a wider coalition on Sunday.
But French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the new body still needed to unite armed rebel factions within Syria under its umbrella to earn full recognition.
"What happened in Doha is a step forward," he told reporters in Paris. "It is still not sufficient to constitute a provisional government that can be recognized internationally."
Britain's foreign minister, William Hague, also said the coalition must show it had support within Syria before London would acknowledge it as the rightful government.
"If they have this, yes, we will then recognize them as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people," he told reporters at the Arab-European meeting in Cairo.
The opposition had hoped its new-found unity would clear the way for outside powers to arm the rebels, but Western nations fear such weapons could reach the hands of Islamist militants.
Western concern has also been heightened by documented reports of atrocities by ill-disciplined insurgents.
"Syria's newly created opposition front should send a clear message to opposition fighters that they must adhere to the laws of war and human rights law, and that violators will be held accountable," New York-based Human Rights Watch said.
The French defence minister called for "a unification of military action to avoid haphazard military operations" and also urged rebels to rein in radical Islamist "Salafist elements".
BORDER VIOLENCE
Assad, whose family have ruled Syria for 42 years, has vowed to fight to the death in a conflict that has already killed an estimated 38,000 people and risks sucking in other countries.
His warplanes again struck homes in rebel-held Ras al-Ain. Civilians fled over the border dividing it from the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar and thick plumes of smoke billowed upwards.
Syrian jets and artillery hit the town of Albu Kamal on the frontier with Iraq, where rebels have seized some areas, according to the mayor of the Iraqi border town of Qaim.
Tension also remained high on the Golan Heights, where Israeli gunners have retaliated against stray Syrian mortar fire landing on the occupied plateau in the previous two days.
Twenty months of conflict have created a vast humanitarian crisis, with more than 408,000 Syrians fleeing to neighboring countries and up to four million expected to need aid by early next year, according to the United Nations.
Fighting has also displaced 2.5 million civilians inside Syria, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent estimates.
"If anything, they believe it could be more; this is a very conservative estimate," Melissa Fleming, chief spokeswoman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said in Geneva.
"So people are moving, really on the run, hiding," she told a news briefing. "They are difficult to count and access."
In Cairo, Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby urged other opposition factions to join what is formally known as the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces.
But although six Gulf Arab nations recognized the coalition as Syria's only legitimate representative on Monday, Iraq, Algeria and Lebanon prevented the League from following suit.
Iraq and Lebanon, with influential Shi'ite populations, have generally maintained better relations with Iran and with Assad, whose minority Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Most emerging infectious diseases of humans come from animals. International health agencies monitor these diseases, but they do so only for humans and livestock, not for companion dogs and cats. A new study recommends a global system is needed to monitor infectious diseases of companion dogs and cats.
The study, led by Michael Day, Professor of Veterinary Pathology in the School of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Bristol and published online in Emerging Infectious Diseases, lists key infectious diseases that may be transmitted between dogs and cats and man ('zoonotic diseases'). It is well recognised that most of the major new diseases of mankind will have an animal origin and dogs and cats are a potential source of such 'emerging diseases'.
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) One Health Committee, which promotes the closer integration of human and animal healthcare ('One Health') in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO), recommends in the paper a co-ordinated global disease monitoring system is established for veterinarians who work in small companion animal practice.
However, development of such a scheme would require significant political will, scientific application and financial support that could be achieved through a public-private partnership. The knowledge gained through surveillance would permit more effective global control of small companion animal zoonoses and so reduce the risks inherent within this most fundamental of human relationships.
Canine rabies virus infection, one of the diseases listed in the paper, is estimated to kill a minimum of 55,000 people in Africa and Asia each year.
Michael Day, Professor of Veterinary Pathology in the School of Veterinary Sciences, said: "The number of small companion animals is significant. For example there are an estimated eight to ten million dogs living in up to 31 per cent of UK homes and in the USA, 72 million dogs in 37 per cent of homes.
"In developed countries the relationship between man and dogs and cats has deepened, with these animals now closely sharing the human indoor environment. The benefits of pet ownership on human health, well-being and development are unquestionable, but as dogs and cats have moved from the barn, to the house, to the bedroom, the potential for disease spread to humans increases. Control of diseases among dogs and cats is a good way to prevent spread to humans."
Small companion animals, most typically dogs and cats, are kept by people for companionship or a range of utilitarian purposes. In human, livestock and wildlife heath there are programmes of active surveillance for infectious disease, which monitor the global distribution and movement of key infectious agents. For example, the WHO monitors human influenza virus infection through a network of 111 centres in 83 countries. In contrast, there is no such monitoring for the infections that may be transmitted between small companion animals and man.

Most emerging infectious diseases of humans come from animals. International health agencies monitor these diseases, but they do so only for humans and livestock, not for companion dogs and cats. A new study recommends a global system is needed to monitor infectious diseases of companion dogs and cats.
The study, led by Michael Day, Professor of Veterinary Pathology in the School of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Bristol and published online in Emerging Infectious Diseases, lists key infectious diseases that may be transmitted between dogs and cats and man ('zoonotic diseases'). It is well recognised that most of the major new diseases of mankind will have an animal origin and dogs and cats are a potential source of such 'emerging diseases'.
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) One Health Committee, which promotes the closer integration of human and animal healthcare ('One Health') in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO), recommends in the paper a co-ordinated global disease monitoring system is established for veterinarians who work in small companion animal practice.
However, development of such a scheme would require significant political will, scientific application and financial support that could be achieved through a public-private partnership. The knowledge gained through surveillance would permit more effective global control of small companion animal zoonoses and so reduce the risks inherent within this most fundamental of human relationships.
Canine rabies virus infection, one of the diseases listed in the paper, is estimated to kill a minimum of 55,000 people in Africa and Asia each year.
Michael Day, Professor of Veterinary Pathology in the School of Veterinary Sciences, said: "The number of small companion animals is significant. For example there are an estimated eight to ten million dogs living in up to 31 per cent of UK homes and in the USA, 72 million dogs in 37 per cent of homes.
"In developed countries the relationship between man and dogs and cats has deepened, with these animals now closely sharing the human indoor environment. The benefits of pet ownership on human health, well-being and development are unquestionable, but as dogs and cats have moved from the barn, to the house, to the bedroom, the potential for disease spread to humans increases. Control of diseases among dogs and cats is a good way to prevent spread to humans."

The Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, awarded UB?s School of Nursing a $695,000 grant. The grant aims to increase the number of primary care providers by assisting nurses who are pursuing advanced degrees as nurse practitioners (NP).
UB was one of approximately 71 universities to receive the prestigious award. This will allow the institution to ?lead change and impact health care delivery,? said Marsha Lewis, professor and dean of the School of Nursing, in an interview with UB Reporter.
The grant is anticipated to provide financial support for approximately 30 to 40 students per semester for two years. The money will be used to cover tuition, books and living expenses, according to Robert Cenczyk, assistant to the academic dean in the School of Nursing.
Not only does it allow the school to financially assist the students, but it also slows the increasing faculty shortages at nursing schools across the country by training more advanced-educated nurses. These nationwide faculty shortages have also decreased new enrollments.
?Locally, this grant allows us to both increase the quality ofcare throughout the region and increase access to health care for older adults in Western New York,? Cenczyk said.
The grant is specifically for post-baccalaureate students who already have six credits in the post-baccalaureate Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program and intend to go into the fields of adult NP, family NP and psych/mental health NP.
The DNP program was accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by SUNY and the New York State Education Department in 2010. ?
The accreditation ?ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate and residency programs in nursing,? according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing website. Without it, the School of Nursing would not have been eligible to apply for the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship (AENT) grant.
??It?s a ?win- win? [situation] because we have students who want to go back to get their NP [degree] and now we have the accreditationand some money to put toward making that happen,? said Donna Tyrpak, director of Alumni Relations and Communications in the School of Nursing.
The serious shortage of all health care providers in the Western New York area led to 163 communities and facilities in the five-county region to be classified as Primary Medical Care Health Professional Shortage Areas by the federal government, according to Cenczyk.
However, the School of Nursing has had great success with previous findings. Over the past two years, over 50 percent of the primary care nurse practitioners supported by AENT went on to work in health professional shortage areas, Cenczyk said. The outcome of today's (Nov. 6) presidential election is unlikely to have a profound impact on the future direction of American spaceflight and exploration, experts say.

While Republican candidate Mitt Romney has revealed few details about his?space plans, a Romney Administration probably wouldn't dramatically alter the path NASA is currently pursuing under President Barack Obama, according to some observers.
"There are unlikely, as a result of the election, to be seismic changes," said space policy expert John Logsdon, a professor emeritus at George Washington University.
The status quo
In 2010, President Obama directed NASA to work toward getting astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid by 2025, then on to the vicinity of Mars by the mid-2030s. [Gallery: President Obama and NASA]
To reach these deep-space destinations, the agency is developing a huge rocket called the?Space Launch System?and a crew capsule called Orion. NASA hopes the SLS-Orion combo will begin launching astronauts by late 2021.
The Obama Administration has also encouraged NASA to hand over crew and cargo activities in low-Earth orbit (LEO) to private American companies. The aim is to fill the void left by the 2011 retirement of the?space shuttle program, which was set in motion by President George W. Bush back in 2004.
NASA has doled out a total of $1.4 billion in the past two years to firms developing crewed vehicles. The agency wants at least two crewed commercial spaceships to be up and running by 2017; until then, the United States will remain dependent on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to provide this orbital taxi service.
The progress has been faster on the cargo front, with California-based SpaceX completing the first of 12 contracted supply flights to the International Space Station with its?robotic Dragon capsule?last month. NASA has also inked a resupply deal with Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., which aims to launch a demonstration mission to the orbiting lab in the coming months.
