CEO Of London?s Tech City Project Departs, As Global Tech Race Heats Up

Eric van der Kleij is to depart his post as CEO of the UK's Tech City Investment Organisation (TCIO) after his two year contract comes to an end this Summer. The TCIO was set up by the UK government to promote East London's pre-existing cluster of technology startups and is just one of hundreds of similar initiatives around the world where a city is promoted as a 'tech city'. It's a natural course to take, given that tech is one of the few economic areas growing during a downturn in developed economies. Even tech-obsessed San Francisco itself is thinking that way. A TCIO spokesperson told us it plans to advertise the positions "in the next couple of weeks". Mr. van der Kleij will go part-time from the end of July and steps down formally in September. TCIO now plans to split his role into two, a CEO and a Deputy CEO. Both positions have yet to be filled. The CEO will be external-facing, promoting the East London hub, while their Deputy will organise events and promote the tech community on the ground in London. Sources told us Mr. van der Kleij had been too stretched trying to fulfil both roles.

Blackberry maker RIM to cut 5,000 jobs and delay new phones

Struggling BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. revealed Thursday that its business is crumbling faster than expected.

The Canadian company posted worse results for its latest quarter than analysts had expected. It's cutting 5,000 jobs and delaying the launch of its new phone operating system, BlackBerry 10, until after the holiday shopping season.

After several delays, the first phone with BlackBerry 10 was expected later this year. It will be delayed even longer, to the first quarter of next year, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.

The delay comes as North Americans are abandoning BlackBerrys for iPhones and Android phones.

Analysts have long said the new BlackBerrys will come out too late to reverse RIM's fortunes. RIM was pinning its hope on the new BlackBerry 10 system, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand.

Now it will come out months after a new iPhone is expected to be released. Current and previous iPhones have made the BlackBerry look ancient.

The jobs cuts are part of a previously announced initiative to cut $1 billion in annual costs this year. They represent about 30 per cent of RIM's workforce, which is currently at 16,500.

'It is necessary to change the scale and refocus the company,' Heins said on a conference call with analysts.

'I fully understand the impact a workforce reduction of this size has on our employees and the communities in which we operate. I assure you that we wouldn't move forward with a change of this size if we didn't think it was critical for our future.'

RIM shares plunged $1.38, or 15 per cent, to $7.75 in extended trading, after the release of the results. If they hold that level into regular trading Friday, they will set a new nine-year low.

Heins acknowledged that he delivered 'a lot of tough news.'

'This was a challenging quarter for the company on many fronts,' he said. 'And I am not satisfied with the financial performance we are reporting today.'

Heins had previously vowed to do everything he could to release BlackBerry 10 this year but he said Thursday that the timetable simply wasn't realistic. He said RIM's top priority remains a successful launch of the new BlackBerrys.

'I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers,' he said. 'There will be no compromise on this issue.'

He said the company will release fewer models than in the past. He also said RIM will launch a BlackBerry 10 model with a physical keyboard close to the launch of the touch-screen model. RIM earlier said it would come out with a touch-screen model first, but it didn't say when it would make one with a physical keyboard, a feature that many people stay with BlackBerrys for.

RIM previously said it hired a team of bankers to help it weigh its options as it loses market share and its business erodes. Heins said they continue to study those options, but he declined to share those options and said the board would have to approve any changes.

RIM lost $518 million, or 99 cents a share, in its fiscal first quarter, which ended June 2. This compares with a profit of $695 million, or $1.33 per share, a year ago.

Excluding impairment charges, the latest loss was 37 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting a loss of 3 cents.

Revenue fell 43 per cent to $2.8 billion, well below analyst expectations at $3.1 billion.

RIM said it shipped just 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones in the quarter, down 41 per cent from 13.2 million a year earlier.

Heins said the company is expecting the next several quarters to be 'very challenging.' He said RIM is in the midst of a platform transition and faces an increasingly competitive environment. Research firm IDC says BlackBerrys U.S. market share has plummeted from 41.1 per cent in 2007 to 3.6 per cent in first three months of 2012.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said the results and news of a BlackBerry 10 delay is far worse than the horrible news he had already expected.

'When a technology gets old, it's not a slow fade. It's a sharp cliff,' Gillis said.

'There is very little market for old technology.'

Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord, called the BlackBerry 10 delay dire and problematic in a rapidly changing technology sector.

'The biggest disappointment is the delay of the BlackBerry 10,' he said. 'It's extremely challenging for them to turn around the business when their new smartphone is launching that late.'

Academy Award-winning writer and director Nora Ephron has passed away after battling an aggressive form of leukemia, according to news reports. She was 71.

Ephron was behind iconic films such as ?You?ve Got Mail,? ?When Harry Met Sally,? ?Sleepless in Seattle? and ?Julie Julia.?

CBS News reported that Dr. Gail Roboz, who is Ephron?s oncologist, said she died from acute myeloid leukemia. She passed away at Weill-Cornell/New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

However, the International Business Times reported that a Washington Post columnist was told that she actually died from the blood disorder myelodysplasia, which she had been diagnosed with earlier.

Leukemia is cancer that occurs in the blood-forming tissues, such as the bone marrow, according to the Mayo Clinic. In people with leukemia, blood cells aren?t produced properly by the bone marrow; over time, these abnormal cells grow and overcome the healthy cells.

There are expected to be 47,150 new cases of the disease this year, and 23,540 deaths, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The main types of leukemia are grouped into four kinds: two chronic, and two acute, each depending on what kind of cell is affected ? either the lymphoid cells, or the myeloid cells. Acute leukemia is aggressive and requires quick treatment, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, while chronic leukemia occurs more slowly and can go undiagnosed for some time.

Ephron was reported to have acute myeloid leukemia. The Leukemia Lymphoma Society said that treatment is imperative immediately after diagnosis with this kind of leukemia.

Risk factors for leukemia include genetic diseases, blood disorders, having been exposed to radiation or certain chemicals, having gone through cancer treatment previously, smoking, and having a family history of the disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The disease is treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplants to replace disease bone marrow with healthy bone marrow, biological therapy to boost the immune system and targeted therapy to attack the cancer cells, the Mayo Clinic reported.

Sea level in Northeastern US rising more than three times faster than global average

As the world warms and seas rise, some spots are expected to take the brunt of the higher ocean levels, while others may not see such a deluge, new research by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reveals.

The study homed in on one "hotspot," where?sea levels are rising?more than three times faster than the global average: the 621-mile (1,000-kilometer) stretch along the eastern United States' Atlantic coast.

From Cape Hatteras, N.C., to north of Boston, Mass., tide-gauge records reveal sea levels have increased on average about 0.08 inches (2 millimeters) per year from 1950 to 2009. Globally, meanwhile, sea levels have increased about 0.02 inches (0.6 millimeter) per year during that window.

Records for a more recent, 40-year period, beginning in 1970, revealed faster rates of sea-level rise both globally and for this stretch of the U.S. East Coast. And rates are expected to continue increasing as?global warming, which climate scientists agree is the result of greenhouse gas emissions, continues.

Researchers expected this to have a direct impact on people living in this area. ?

"Cities in the hotspot, like Norfolk, New York and Boston already experience damaging floods during relatively low-intensity storms," lead researcher Asbury Sallenger with the USGS said in a statement. "Ongoing accelerated sea-level rise in the hotspot will make coastal cities and surrounding areas increasingly vulnerable to flooding by adding to the height that storm surge and breaking waves reach on the coast."

Sea-level rise is primarily driven by two factors. Melting ice,?from mountain glaciers to ice sheets, is an important contributor. Ultimately, the ice sheets that cover Greenland and Antarctica are expected to make massive contributions. Warmth also causes water to take up more space, a phenomenon called thermal expansion. But the effects?don't play out evenly?everywhere for a number of reasons. For instance, melting ice can cause land to rebound as weight is lifted, causing relative sea level to fall. Melting ice redistributes mass on the planet, and as a result, changes the distribution of the oceans. Likewise, changes in currents and winds alter the distribution of ocean-expanding heat. ???

The research team links rapid sea-level rise within this hotspot to a slowdown in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current, which transports warm water from the tropics into the higher latitudes. Fluctuations in this current have profound implications for climate, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The results of the research were detailed in Sunday's (June 24) issue of the journal Climate Change.

The first paternity study of southern right whales has found a surprisingly high level of local breeding success for males, scientists say, which is good news for the overall genetic diversity of the species, but could create risk for local populations through in-breeding.

Results of the study, by researchers at the University of Auckland, Oregon State University and the New Zealand Department of Conservation, have just been published in the journal Molecular Ecology.

The study found that most of the right whales born near the remote sub-Antarctic islands of New Zealand were fathered by males from the same local population, according to lead author Emma Carroll, who recently completed her doctorate at the University of Auckland.

"This finding gives us information on the breeding behavior of right whales, but more importantly it shows that the New Zealand population is relatively isolated from other populations in the region, including that of neighboring Australia," Carroll said.

In other words, male southern right whales don't get around much ? and that kind of behavior is surprising.

"In other species of mammals, males usually disperse from their place of birth to seek new mating opportunities," said Scott Baker, associated director of the Marine Mammal Institute at Oregon State University, and co-author on the study. "But with right whales, it seems that local fidelity to breeding habitat is strong ? for both males and females."

Southern right whales were hunted to near-extinction by commercial whaling, but some populations around New Zealand and Australia have slowly started to recover. Baker, who works out of OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Ore., initiated the genetic study of right whales in the region in 1995 in part to assess the likelihood that they could recover.

The New Zealand right whale population had plummeted to fewer than a hundred animals by 1920, from more than 30,000 before Europeans arrived in the late 18th century. The authors estimate that by 1998, the population had increased to about 1,000 individuals. Their newest study sought to determine the connectivity, or isolation, of the regional populations so as to better monitor and manage right whales, which are listed as a "Nationally Endangered" species in New Zealand.

The paternity analysis has also helped to explain the right whale mating behavior observed in the Auckland Islands, which is also a primary habitat for calving and nursing.

"It is difficult to distinguish social interactions from actual mating in southern right whales," said Carroll, who did her Ph.D. studies under Baker. "When and where individuals breed has been difficult to judge in this migratory species. By using DNA profiles from mothers and calves to identify likely fathers among males sampled in New Zealand, we now think mating takes place locally rather than during migration or on distant feeding grounds."

Carroll, Baker and colleagues gathered DNA from small skin samples collected during a 15-year period from 34 mother-calf pairs, and more than 300 males ? about 30 percent of the male right whales in New Zealand.

Although they didn't match all of the calves with fathers, the proportion that did match was also 30 percent, consistent with the number of males sampled from the population. The authors then showed that it was highly unlikely that this many paternities would be assigned to local males if males from outside the New Zealand population were fathering calves.

"It is possible, but unlikely, that males from the Australian population have fathered some of the other calves," Carroll said. "We cannot exclude the possibility of the occasional visiting suitor."

Baker, who frequently provides advice to the International Whaling Commission on cetacean conservation genetics, said that although in-breeding could be a problem at very low numbers, local fidelity also has advantages.

"Along with preserving greater overall diversity, local fidelity may allow for habitat specialization and the transmission of cultural memory," he pointed out. "It becomes easier to pass along such things as locations of breeding and feeding grounds."

Although right whales demonstrate fidelity to their own population, the researchers say, they are anything but monogamous. Males compete in "sperm competition" through multiple mating encounters with different females, rather than physical confrontations with each other, as do males in most other species of mammals. This may be why male right whales have the largest testicles in the animal kingdom, the researchers noted in their study ? up to six feet in diameter and weighing as much as a ton.

Next 3DMark teased, who says benchmarks don't need trailers? (video)

Futuremark, one of the preeminent benchmark companies out there, is gearing up to let loose a new version of its 3DMark gaming test. The new suite will hammer GPUs with a DirectX 11-based scene designed to push a system to its limits. Now, benchmarks are hardly the sort of thing that people get excited for... usually. But Futuremark still sees a need to drum up interest for its Windows-only program in a landscape increasingly focused on mobile gaming and power-sipping GPUs. Hence the trailer (which you'll find after the break) that shows off just what 3DMark will demand of your next gaming rig. Its visuals aren't quite as jaw-dropping as Epic's Unreal Engine 4 demo, or as over-dramatic as the Samaritan demo NVIDIA has been running for the last few years. But, it's still an impressive showcase of dynamic lighting techniques, particle effects and fluid dynamic simulation. In particular the subtlety of the smoke is eye catching. Teen Mom continued its depressing final season last night by delving deeper into the struggles of the fab four we know, love, love to hate, and sympathize with. It's a very complicated relationship ... something they all know plenty about.

Farrah's dad moves her stuff to Florida, then notes that he'd consider moving there too if he could get a job. Farrah? Not happy with this. Minus 17.

Amber's counselor pleads with her that she should not get involved with Gary again, because they have a toxic relationship. Best advice ever. Plus 10.

After Farrah's dad dejectedly headed home, she took Sophia to the pet store. Even though Sophia told her she wanted a fish, they got a puppy. Minus 4.

Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Baltierra graduate!!!!!! They were the stars of the season premiere and continue to be the lone bright spot this week. Plus 35.

Maci had her friends talk about Ryan’s new girlfriend and the maternity pictures still up in his parents' house. It's an awkward situation to be sure.

Gary and Leah are actually going to meet Amber the next day. Plus 10 for him making the effort, but knowing what we do, it's hard to be hopeful.

We harp on Maci and Farrah and their respective problems, but when you choose prison over your kid, as Amber did, you've really got issues. Minus 20.

'Dallas' Episode Two: Five Key Scenes

TNT reboot's manipulative double-crossers mix business and pleasure.

Hoo boy! How about these wheelin', dealin' and totally deceiving folks on "Dallas"? If Wednesday night's new episode taught us anything, it's that too many people in and around Southfork are a bunch of manipulative double-crossers. We've already touched on the TNT reboot's new blood and the lingering questions we had after the first episode, so now it's time to tackle episode two's talking points:

Elena Still Loves Christopher
The last we heard about Christopher and Elena's broken engagement was that it happened because of an email. Well, in this episode, we learn all about that email and that neither Christopher nor John Ross are responsible for sending it — or so they claim. The most emotionally charged revelation that comes from Elena's frank discussion with John Ross about the subject is that she is still in love with Christopher. Not that she confesses her feelings outright, but it's written all over her face when John Ross asks her if the only reason she got together with him in the first place was because of her heartbreak over Christopher.

John Ross and J.R.: Wolves in Wolfskin Coats
One minute, we see John Ross all worked up and emotional in learning Elena's true feelings, and the next, he is getting all hot and heavy with alleged business partner/fellow Bobby Ewing conspirator Marta del Sol. Not to mention the dirty dealings and bribery he's orchestrating with lawyer Mitch Lobell. And then there's the patriarch, J.R. himself, who plays up his recent hospitalization for sympathy and pretends to have genuine feelings for his brother Bobby and ex-wife Sue Ellen. That old adage about not trusting a man as far as you can throw him is certainly apt with regard to John Ross and J.R. Ewing. Sheesh.

Mixing Business With Pleasure
Clearly, no one is concerned with the ramifications of mixing business and pleasure in this town. There's the very obvious kind, as demonstrated by the hanky panky between John Ross and Marta, along with the subconscious kind, as exhibited by the professional agreement orchestrated by Christopher and Elena. Both practices will likely end in a bad way. We've already seen several levels of shady behavior from Marta, and can expect to see a sex tape/blackmail scandal somewhere in the very near future. And despite the innocent nature of Christopher and Elena's partnership, their unfinished business will most definitely come to a head in an adulterous manner.

Rebecca: A Good Girl Gone Bad?
Well, well, well — it appears that the new Mrs. Christopher Ewing is not at all the innocent doting wife she appears to be and has a hidden agenda. Thanks to a heated conversation between the newlywed and her brother Tommy — who may or may not be her actual blood relative given the twists and turns we've already seen in this show — we now know that she and Tommy have been working on getting close to the Ewings and Southfork for two years, a plot that snake in the grass-esque Tommy refers to as a "job." So, what kind of job are they doing? Our guess is trying to pull a con or coup of some sort.

Will the Real Marta Del Sol Please Stand Up?
Actually, we don't need the real Marta to stand up, because we meet her in the final minutes of the episode! What a fun twist for us — and J.R.! Because he took the initiative to discuss the sale of Southfork to the del Sol conservancy with Mr. Carlos del Sol himself in Mexico, J.R. is presented with an unpleasant surprise: The real Marta del Sol lives with her father in Mexico, and he and his son have been dealing with a cunning and stealth imposter.
