Help Wanted: LGBT Families To Adopt | The New Civil Rights ...
Britain has certainly moved forward over the last few years, accepting that our families have amazingly loving homes and have the same ability to provide support to children as heterosexually coupled families. 
The country?s first ever National LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week kicked off this past week highlighting powerful stories of adoption and foster families as well as the localities and organizations that are on the forefront of helping all children find homes that are loving. This is at a time when gay adopters and foster parents are being viewed in a different light, not only by those empowered to place the children, such as social workers and commissioners but also by the public who are beginning to see the reality of excluding loving homes, even those parented by gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender couples.
In recent surveys that were done at the behest of New Family Social there was a great amount of support and recognition for the strengths of LGBT couples.
In a recent press release by the organizers of LGBT AF Week they point out that ?at a time when adoption figures are at a 10 year low, a new study shows lesbian and gay people often have the right mix of skills and experience to raise children who have been in ?care, and give them a great new start in life.?
72% of social workers surveyed saw the ?amount of energy and enthusiasm? LGBT adopters bring to the process as a significant strength.
76% saw ?openness to difference, and supporting a child with a sense of difference? as equally important.
For a long time, LGBT people tended to be seen as a ?last resort? when placing children. Now adoption and fostering agencies see them as having a key role to play in meeting the urgent need for more new homes for children in care.
Considering itself as a campaign that is working to recruit LGBT couples that perhaps in the past have been denied or turned away or those who have recently become able to foster or adopt children, the LGBT AF Week is working hard with events that are making all sides of the issues facing displaced children.

?Over the years, our LGBT foster carers and adopters have helped to transform many
children?s lives. We welcome more applications from LGBT foster carers and adopters; the
main thing is that you are able to give children and young people the care and support

choosing adoption and fostering as a way to form a family, and we want prospective
parents to see just how rewarding it can be, and how much advice and support is on offer

Suffolk County Council?s fostering and adoption services believe the LGBT community is a huge, untapped resource of potential adopters and foster carers.
In a local article published this past week, Graham Newman, the council?s portfolio holder for children, schools and young people?s services, said: ?It?s important that Suffolk County Council recruits adopters and foster carers from all walks of life to provide much-needed homes for Suffolk?s vulnerable children. We?re supporting this year?s campaign in an effort to encourage more people from the LGBT community to come forward and consider this life-changing opportunity. Over the last few years, Suffolk?s adoption agency has approved and successfully placed children with gay and lesbian adopters, and we hope this year?s campaign will encourage more people to come forward.?
At a time when there are growing divides in the United States as well as Canada between right wing religious groups and the LGBT and socially progressive communities, it is great to see that there are agencies who are working towards what is right and not the best talking point.

My Damage Survey of the Rome Tornado
At approximately 10:04 a tornado touched down in Rome, GA.... It traveled around 3 miles with around 95mph winds and at one point it was around 75yards wide. Not a very wide or long tracked tornado, but if you were hit by it it was life changing. I headed up to Rome yesterday to survey the damage myself to see what I thought since the NWS had just issued a statement that it was an ef1. This will be an analysis of what I saw and my conclusion.

This is the first thing I saw when I pulled up to the site. It looked like total debris slammed all over the place, like a tornado had torn it apart..... Once I got closer I saw something different as I looked at the rest of the building. The back of the building was directly perpendicular to where the wind was coming from. The wind hit that wall, went straight up and lifted the roof from behind and threw it over in one piece. I could tell because all the shingles were pointing down, and nails were pointing up. It all came down as one big piece and then fractured. At this point in time I had determined that this was straight line wind damage.

This house was directly across the street from where that roof was torn off. This actually was a simple assessment for me when we walked upon it. Every single piece of lumber was lined up in the exact same direction and all the trees that were lying down in that same direction too. It was very clear to me that this was straight line wind damage. So I had to figure out in my head how the NWS went with an EF1 when all was seeing was straight line wind damage. The only thing that was saying anything different was that the damage swath was very very narrow..... Straight line wind damage is usually very spread out. I had to go find the beginning of the track.

We wend back about 2 miles from where we were on Kingston Highway to find the starting point of the tornado and what I found floored me. It was a 75 yard wide area of giant pine trees that were again all knocked down in the exact same direction.... I was really scratching my head again on this trying to figure out how the NWS called this event a tornado....... So after thinking for a bit I again focused on the fact that the trees were all lying down in the same direction but was only 75 yards wide and stayed that wide. Also as I turned and looked more towards the right (south) I started seeing trees snapped mid trunk and thrown in directions a bit more towards the center of where this swath was... ahhhh, I was starting to see some convergent patterns where the trees to the right hand side of the path were bent a bit more towards the center of the swath. This is consistent with tornado damage.

As we walked away from the area that had a lot of trees laying down in the same direction we started to see some trees that were laying across each other, the roots were pointing in opposite directions, consistent with swirling winds inside a tornado. At this point in time for this specific location it seemed like tornado damage. But even up the road from there there were a lot of trees laying in the same direction in a very narrow path. And then it clicked.. What I thought was the center of the swath was actually the 12-6 o'clock position of a tornado!!!

It all goes back to the classical physics experiment with throwing a ball from a moving train... If you and I were standing on a flatbed on a train going 60mph and I threw the ball at you that was traveling at 60mph, it would hit you at 60mph. If you were standing on the ground and I was on a train going 60mph and threw the ball at 60 mph, it would hit you at 60mph(the speed of the ball) + 60mph(the speed of the train) = 120 mph!!!! This is called relative motion. So, same with the tornado with its winds (acting like a ball) and the motion of the tornado (the speed of the train) The tornado had max wind speeds of around 70mph according to the NWS, and it was moving at 40mph. so on the right hand side the relative winds (the wind speed the trees felt) was 110mph!!! On the left hand side they felt winds at 30mph which is weak and would do nothing to trees!?
Conclusion
What I had been looking at was the right hand side of the tornado path where with the combined speed of the winds of the tornado plus the forward momentum knocked down a 75 yard wide swath of trees.?

Doubt looms in CERN's Einsten contradiction
GENEVA?? Physicists are to run new tests in May after the CERN research institute said on Thursday that its startling findings appearing to show that one of Einstein's fundamental theories was wrong could have been caused by a loose cable.
The CERN lab near Geneva appeared to contradict Albert Einstein's 1905 Special Theory of Relativity last year when they reported that sub-atomic particles called neutrinos could travel fractionally faster than light.
Einstein's theory, which underpins the current view of how the universe works, says that nothing can travel faster than light, and doing so would be like traveling back in time.
CERN said two possible effects had been identified that could have an influence on its neutrino timing measurement during its OPERA experiment. "New measurements with short pulsed beams are scheduled for May," it said in a statement.
One effect concerned an oscillator used to provide the time stamps for GPS (Global Positioning System) synchronizations, which could have led scientists to overestimate the neutrino's time of flight.
However, the other effect appeared to be more significant in the faster-than-light finding of the original OPERA experiment.
"The second concerns the optical fiber connector that brings the external GPS signal to the OPERA master clock, which may not have been functioning correctly when the measurements were taken," said CERN. "If this is the case, it could have led to an underestimate of the time of flight of the neutrinos."
The faster-than-light finding was recorded when 15,000 neutrino beams were pumped over three years from CERN to an underground Italian laboratory at Gran Sasso near Rome.
James Gillies, a spokesman for CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) said late on Wednesday that the result was now in doubt.
"A possible explanation has been found. But we won't know until we have tested it out with a new beam to Gran Sasso," Gillies told Reuters in Geneva.
Physicists on the experiment said when they reported it last September that they had checked and rechecked over many months anything that could have produced a misreading before announcing what they had found.
A second test whose results were announced in November appeared to provide further evidence that neutrinos were traveling faster than light. But many experts remained skeptical of a result that would have overturned one of the fundamental principles of modern physics.
Edward Blucher, chairman of the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago, said the original finding would have been breathtaking if it had been true. As it was, the research inspired many spirited discussions, if few believers.
"I don't think I met anyone who said I bet it's going to be true. I think the people on the experiment worked as carefully as they could and I think they ran out of ideas of what could be wrong and they decided to present it," he said.
"Maybe they should have waited a few more months," he added.

[Abstract]
Background and objective:Colorectal cancer was considered a genetic disease would happen if there were defects in genes that would control cell differentiation. Recently in vitro study and animal experiments have show oncogene Pokemon could inhibit suppress gene ARF in specificity. Pokemon plays an important role in occurrence and development of tumor. P14ARF was encoded from INK4a-ARF, a cancer suppress gene. P14ARF could postpone the degradation of p53. The p53 is regulated by p14ARF in cell cycle regulation. P53 is a cancer suppress gene. It could transit stimulating information from outside of cell into gene, which could prevent cell from G1 to S phase and induce apoptosis. P53 is mutated in colorectal cancer and can be detected by immunohistochemical method. At present, researches about the relationship of p14ARF?p53 and colorectal cancer are more than Pokemon which can develop cancer through ARF-p53 pathway. The colorectaI cancer samples we collected were different in their pathological levels. In our study, the expression of Pokemon mRNA was detected by semi-quantitation RT-PCR and the expression of p14ARF and p53 protein was investigated by immunohistochemical test. We also analyze the relationship of the expression of Pokemon and the expression of p14ARF and p53 at the same time. We expected our study could provide molecular biology evidence of potential mechanism in occurrence, progressing of colorectal cancer.Methods:Thirty-nine cases with colorectal adenocarcinoma were included in the present study who were performed surgical resection in Tongji University affiliated Tenth Shanghai municipal Hospital April, 2005 to December, 2005. Those recurring colorectal cancers after operation and with primary malignant tumors of other organs were excluded. All cases did not take radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy before. The expression of Pokemon mRNA in cancer and para-cancer tissues was detected by semi-quantitation RT-PCR test. Pathological staging and histological grouping were identified by routine HE dying. The expression and distribution of p14ARF and p53 were investigated using immunohistochemical dying of SP method. For all statistical analysis, SPSS 10.0 software was used. The probability of less than 0.05 was assumed to be statistically significant (P?0.05).Result:RT-PCR result: The result of RT-PCR showed that the expression of Pokemon mRNA was found both in colorectal cancer and para-cancer samples. The difference was significant in statistics. Expression of p14ARF and p53 was not related to differentiation degrees.Conclusion:1. The expression of Pokemon mRNA in colorectal cancer samples was higher than in para-cancer samples. This suggested that Pokemon gene expression is involved in colorectal cancer. The expression amount was related with cancer differentiation. This suggested that Pokemon gene expression maybe related with malignancy degree.2. The expression of Pokemon mRNA was negatively related with the expression of p14ARF both in colorectal cancer and para-cancer samples. This indicated the mechanism of Pokemon maybe through inhibiting ARF protein.3. The expression of Pokemon mRNA was not related with the expression of p53 both in colorectal cancer and para-cancer samples. This supposed Pokemon did not inhibit p53 directly. But it could not confirm Pokemon has no effect in p53 pathway.

China's VP heads home after a little Laker magic
LOS ANGELES?? Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping began the last day of his U.S. visit by urging closer ties and arguing that Americans benefit from their trade relationship with China.
"A prosperous and stable China will not be a threat to any country," Xi said Friday. "It will only be a positive force for world peace and development."
Xi, who is expected to become president of the world's most populous nation next year, started his fourth day in the United States at a downtown Los Angeles trade conference hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. His American counterpart, Vice President Joe Biden, joined him later.
Xi wrapped up his visit at Staples Center, where he attended a Los Angeles Lakers-Phoenix Suns basketball game Friday night, where he was presented with a jersey with his name on it in the company of Lakers legend Magic Johnson and soccer star David Beckham.
Following the Lakers' victory, Xi and his party left for the airport.
'Personal friendship'
Xi said that he felt from his visit that "mainstream American opinion" supports stronger ties.
"I can now say that my visit has been fully successful," he said.
"We've established a personal friendship and a healthy working relationship," he said of himself and Biden.
Xi is almost sure to succeed Hu Jintao as Chinese president in just over a year, and the final day of his tour of the United States featured commercial deals and reassuring talk intended to blunt American ire about the trade gap between the countries.
"We will further increase imports from other countries in the light of our economic and social development and consumer demand. We will actively expand imports from the United States," Xi later told a midday meeting.

Any view that the U.S. is the loser in its trade relationship with China "does not square with facts," Xi said through a translator.
Chinese imports have helped Americans improve their standard of living and created more than 3 million new jobs in the U.S. from 2001 to 2010, Xi said.
Xi also said that China's economic momentum would not falter as some economists warn.
"China's economy will maintain stable growth," he said. "There will be no so-called hard landing."

California Gov. Jerry Brown and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa both lauded the U.S.-China relationship.
"We've got a great future together," said Brown, who announced plans to open a new trade and investment office in China.
China is a major trade partner with Los Angeles, which has greatly benefited from its Pacific Rim position and has courted Chinese businesses and their potential jobs.

During his visit, Xi toured the Port of Los Angeles, America's busiest port complex. Nearly 60 percent of the imports moving through the port come from China.

After the trade forum, Xi and Biden visited a suburban school in South Gate that specializes in Asian studies to promote more American students studying in China.

The vice presidents watched a traditional Chinese "dragon dance" performed by middle- and high-school students at the International Studies Learning Center, a public school that is part of the Asia Society's network of schools across the country.
"You are an impressive group of students," Biden said. "Thank you for making America look so good."
Biden told the students that the U.S.-China relationship is the single most important relationship the country has in the 21st century.

Coach Nem was officially introduced by third-division side XV de Jau to fans and local media on Monday. He was let go after the team's 3-1 loss to Flamengo in the third division of the Sao Paulo state championship on Wednesday.

The environment secretary is to meet water companies, farmers and wildlife groups amid fears that parts of Britain may face the worst drought since 1976.
Parts of south-east England, East Anglia and the east Midlands are among the worst affected areas.
Trevor Bishop, head of water resources at the Environment Agency (EA), says it is "planning for the worst".
Water restrictions could be introduced unless heavy and prolonged rainfall takes place before April, the EA warns.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) called Monday's summit to look at how to deal with the drought.
Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman will meet water companies - who are encouraging customers to cut down on consumption - along with other concerned groups.
A lack of rainfall over the past few months means groundwater levels are still falling in many areas.
Last month EA experts said water levels were so worryingly low that twice the average rainfall was needed if rivers are to recover and a hosepipe ban is to be avoided.

"We're reaching the end of the second consecutive dry winter and that's very unusual so the situation is getting quite serious across the east of England, the Midlands and the south-east," Mr Bishop told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme.
"It's not quite as bad as the situation we saw in 1976, but it's unusually close so we're planning for the worst."
The EA, which covers England and Wales, has had to oxygenate rivers and move fish that have become stranded in isolated pools and farmers have been prevented from drawing water from rivers in some cases.
It is very unusual to be carrying out this kind of activity at this time of year, Mr Bishop said.
This week the Centre for Hydrology and Ecology reported that average rainfall so far this winter was the lowest since 1972.
Northamptonshire has had the driest 16 months since records began and the eastern region of England has had its driest spell in 90 years, the EA said.
Paul Valleley, director of water services at Anglian Water, said it was monitoring the situation very closely but the likelihood of a hosepipe ban was increasing if it remains dry.
"We do have some reservoirs that are 20% below where we would ideally like them at this time of year," he said.
"It really does now depend on how the weather goes in the coming weeks and months as to how much of that water we do recover.
"If it remains dry then we will have a problem coming into the summer."
Water companies, the EA, Natural England, British Waterways, the Met Office, representatives from the agricultural sector and environmental non-governmental organisations will be at the summit, Defra said.
Ms Spelman said: "All of our activity is going to be carefully co-ordinated so that we are able to minimise the effects of unpredictable water availability and support people in doing the right thing in taking sensible measures to save water."
